The closure of schools for the Summer Term 2020 forced

the abandonment of public examinations and the institution of new protocols for awarding pupils grades and qualifications.

Several public consultations run by Ofqual resulted in teachers’ being asked to make grade projections for all pupils based on the evidence we had seen in School.

Each subject was considered in isolation with the advised assumption that pupils should be awarded assessed grades that corresponded to how they would most likely have performed were the examinations to have gone ahead.

The original intention was for a formal moderation of our proposed grades by the relevant examination boards.

This process was later rescinded and our original grades instated as the final published results. In all, pupils taking A level and Pre-U achieved the equivalent of grades.

All pupils who had secured offers to study at Cambridge or Oxford achieved the grades necessary.

From amongst the 2000+ entries at GCSE and IGCSE level, pupils amassed 35% grade 9, 64% 9/8 and 84% 9–7.

Curriculum Changes In a year of so many operational changes, there has been relatively little of difference to the curriculum schedule.

Cambridge Assessment had previously announced the withdrawal of their Pre-U qualifications, to take place over three years, so departments have been adjusting their programmes accordingly.

Each subject chooses freely from the specifications available; the change to each A level of choice has started and will take place at the most appropriate time for each cohort before the final withdrawal of Pre-U in 2024.

Life of Learning (LoL) The Life of Learning programme continues to engage the entire pupil body through the Assembly programme and ‘Colloquium’ for the Academic Scholars.

The Assemblies are conceived to offer an aspirational educational message

to the pupils during both their Oundle years and beyond – colleagues are only too pleased to evangelise about reading

and libraries, while other topics have included great oratory past and present, the lifelong joys to be found immersing oneself in,

and even translating, a single author and the exciting and ever-changing world of contemporary science.

Oundle pupils are taught to think sceptically and question received wisdom when appropriate

and these skills also featured in the programme for the Fifth Form after their June assessments.
