WIBBELL'S WEIRDOS WELCOMEFilm lovers of weirdness, oddities and the beautifully bizarre have a treat in store, says writer Jodie Taylor, thanks to new Wibbell DVD label. Too often this select group have been kept somewhat on the periphery, says Taylor, having to dedicate themselves to searching in nooks and crannies to satisfy their niche appetite. ******************* The independent British film distributor, Wibbell Productions, is working to reduce the rarity of such films with its new DVD label The Weird World of Wibbell. The label will offer a range of cult, horror and sci-fi feature films while also dealing in short film compilations and some ‘very odd’ special interest documentaries. Content manger, Allin Kempthorne (main photo), with barely containable excitement, has said of the label; "Wibbell are the new weird kids in town! We're the freaks, the nerds, the geeks and the weirdoes. We're the travelling freak show and the vampires castle!". The Weird World of Wibbell is especially keen to give exposure to those that have fallen through the cracks in the mainstream, sifting out the best cult genre films, old and new, and offering them up to audiences with such acquired taste. The first film title to launch the label is the independent British vampire comedy 'The Vampires of Bloody Island', directed by Kempthorne himself. it is already being hailed as a cult classic, set to tantalise fans of horror and comedy alike. A modern comic take on British Hammer Vampire films of the 1970's, it is set on an abandoned island off the Cornish coast which inhabits demons and vampires, and follows Morticia de'Ath, a vampire noblewoman and her living corpse henchman, Grunt, as they concoct a sinister plan. The Weird World of Wibbell has a catalogue of UK DVD releases scheduled for the next twelve months, showcasing the work of emerging directors in the cult, horror and sci-fi genres and also providing nostalgic retrospectives. There’s no doubt Wibbell’s new label will come as a welcome relief to hungry cinephiles of the 'weird' persuasion everywhere. Copyright Jodie Taylor. Posted May 26, 2008 | ![]() |
