WE ARE TOGETHER/AT LAST

Another week, another inspiring British documentary, making the world seem a better placel.

Yes, it is time to sit back, put your feet up and realise that the greedy media minds writing the headlines are wrong.

That contrary to their claims that good news is dull, good news is actually entertaining, enchanting, inspiring, uplifting, you name it.

At least if it is handled properly. That is the trick.

Bad news is easy to report excitingly. Just as car chases excite film audiences more easily than conversations.

No surprise here. Doing quality things requires effort. But, oh, how worthwhile those efforts are when they yield gold like We Are Together.

You can imagine this story landing on an editor's or producer’s desk: Aids-devastated orphans sing songs in South Africa.

Doh? No obvious room there for an A-List actor to lure in the audiences. Pass. Can we have a story with a murder, please.

But British director Paul Taylor was not so easily put off. Having spent a summer holiday as a volunteer in a penniless South African orphanage and met these children face to face, he knew that they could be more emotionally moving than any celebrity with a script and a gun.

Thank goodness. For now this tale is on record forever. How these neglected but resilient children shrugged off more hardship than most people would know in a lifetime to journey half way around the world to sing their melodic words for New York’s toughest crowds.

Good news? And then some. The kind of good news that can send a chill down the spine, of the most invigorating kind.
