Son of Rambow is likely to be one of the big British hits of 2008. There is only one things that might hold it back:

That even the best of plot summaries can convey only a tiny slice of the story’s charm and none of the delicacy of its execution.

Perhaps best to eschew any attempt at telling the tale and settle for comparisons. Such as, this is Stand By Me meets Great Expectations. Or, Harry Potter meets Citizen Kane.

You won’t be any closer to understanding what happens in the film but you might at least get a glimpse of the freshness and funniness of the film.

Still, since it is – or pretends to be – an action pic, some description of the action must be included.

So, briefly, parentless schoolboy rebel blackmails the school’s goody goody swot into being assistant director on his attempt to make a Rambo sequel for a film competition and, in the process, both learn some touching emotional lessons.

The film comes from Gareth Jenning, who delivered the fanciful Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and is irresistible for the warmth of its characters, inspired by Jenning’s own early attempts to break into film.
