ONE DAY/STUFF HAPPENS

There are only so many stories in the world and it becomes increasingly tricky to find fresh ways of telling the most popular ones. Here a brand name cast led by TV star Tanya Franks neatly pull off the task of spicing up that familiar plot of a humdum man breaking away from his routines.

Tim “Blackadder” McInnerny – see, you are laughing already! – plays the hard pressed office worker who is pushed to the brink, looks over … and leaps.

Well, actually, he goes to Blackpool, which, despite its fabled charms, is not exactly a million miles from McInnerny’s offce in balmy Basingstoke and his boss called Buckel, played sterlingly by sauve Toby Stephens (above).

What sets the journey aside is the fact that McInnery does journey alone but actually runs away with Franks (main picture, stripping off with the fugitive), neatly disguised until this point in the story as a clerk in the local video shop.<.p>

Oh, and the fact that he leaves his wife behind! Yes, McInnery has a so-called better half. He has to, doesn’t he? Could hardly call him hard pressed otherwise!

One Day has already won a fan base on the Festival circuit and featured large in London's East End Film Festival in April.
