MARKET TRADERS

It is increasingly difficult to categorize films nowadays. Most features run much longer than they used to, and there is also the mini features market as well as shorts that are anything but short. The situation is even more complicated in the documentary field. For instance, what is one to make of this lively entry. A film about a market, in Walthamstow to be precise, which has an air of Notting Hill about it, and enough drama to make Billy Elliott seem dull.

A young British film director that intends to take Walthamstow Market to the 60th Cannes Film Festival.

Thanks to a man called Stinton’s determination and vision, Great Britain will have at least presence at the film Festival. Apparently, he had to recruit London based talent from the USA and Mexico in order to make this documentary possible.

Dominic Stinton has also one short film (21st Century Wolf) and one music video (The CUT) on the Short Film Corner of the Festival! Not bad for new talent!

BRITISH FILM DIRECTOR TAKES EUROPE’S LONGEST MARTEKT TO CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - London, England (April 22, 2007) – A documentary called “A Portrait of Walthamstow Market” made by British film director Dominic Stinton from south London, has just been selected for screening at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in France taking place next month.

Walthamstow Market is the longest open market in Europe, stretching for around a mile and has been running non stop since 1885. The documentary shot at the north east London market, gives a rarely seen insight into the people of Walthamstow by showing the strong sense of community and camaraderie of the traders and buyers alike.

Featuring a series of interviews with the market’s sellers and buyers, Stinton manages to visually engage the viewer without the help of a narrator and instead uses distinctive editing techniques in order to tell the story.
