LIMELIGHT FILM AWARDSToo many film accolades come at the end of careers, when they are of little practical use. The Limelight Film Awards in east London will be be much more valuable for filmmakers. Tower Hamlet’s witty councillor Shiria Khatun got excited about staging a Cannes Festival type event (main photo and above) to celebrate local filmmaking talent. So nothing mundanely City Hall about her creation. Rather it is meant to be all glittering bright lights and big names, starting with dazzling TV presenter Konnie Huq. With this Blue Peter icon onboard, it is difficult to say whether the winners on the night will be most pleased with their awards or the chance to share the stage with KH herself. Either way, as Khatun says, the award winners will be regarded locally as "superstars", which is no bad way for a kid with a dream to start off. Deadline for the awards was early December so anyone who wasn’t in by then, isn’t in with a chance now until next year. But Limelight’s director Munsur Ali, who runs his own filmmaking company, Spotlight UK, says: "All of the dozen prize categories, from the usual Comedy, Drama and Horror genres through to Experimental matters and one catch all section called FreeFall, were well enough subscribed to make for an interesting competition and to produce winners of a high standard." All will be revealed now at the awards night on Thursday, January 17th. For more information on the Limelight awards visit www.limelight.org Filed January 10, 2008. | ![]() |
