BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM WINNERS

Award ceremonies are hell. At every one, there are always many more admirable losers than winners.

At the BIFAs a few days ago, Control (main photo) gobbled up the lion’s share of kudos, walking away with Best Film, Best Director (Anton Corbijn), Best Newcomer (Sam Riley, pictured left)) and Best Supporting Actor (Toby Kebbell, as the manic manager).

No recriminations there. All deserved nods.

But look who missed out! When Did You Last See Your Father? Was nominated in seven categories and Hallam Foe in six but both ended the evening unrequited. Surely not fair!!!!

Other notable winners were Judi Dench as Best Actress for her lesbian teacher role in Notes On A Scandal and Patrick Marber got Best Screeplay for the same film.

Julian Temple's Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten took the Best Documentary award.

Best British Short was tossed to Dog Altogether directed by consummate actor Paddy Considine.
