"JONATHAN TOOMEY" WINS BEST PRIZE

An independent British film has coped the Best Picture Award at the 6th annual Gloria Film Festival in Utah. Haven’t heard of the Gloria?

That may be because, unlike most Festivals, which tend to rely on glamour and parties, Gloria focuses “on artistically accomplished films with a strong ethical core that stir the soul, heal the heart, and enrich the world.” Can't ask more than that, can one? And, a sweet touch, the Fest is named after the founder’s mother.

Certainly the winning film fits the ethical bill. Called The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, it is based on a much-loved American’s children’s story of the same name and tells of a broken hearted boys friendship with a lonely, ill-tempered wood carver.

p>.They meet after the boy loses a wooden nativity set that linked him to his dead father and his worried mother seeks someone to create a replacement. The son watches the process and makes greater and more difficult demands of the woodcarver's ability, and as Christmas approaches, the three struggle to come to terms with each other, their painful memories and the process of putting their unhappiness behind them.

In short, it is an old-fashioned moral fable that both challenges and uplifts the spirit.

The stars film Tom Berenger as Toomey and Brits Joely Richardson as the mother of boy wonder Luke Ward-Wilkinson.

The writer/director is Bill Clark, a well-established children’s commercials director, who has been working on the project for 10 years, since he first read the book to his own children as a bed-time story.

It is scheduled for a release in the UK this autumn following a tour of festivals from Ireland to Australia.
